At first glance, Black Magic 2 is merely a sequel made solely based on the huge popularity of Black Magic, not as a continuation of story, and while this is true, the movie manages to be just as entertaining and maybe even more cohesive. Even though I enjoyed the love-potion-triangle aspect of the first film best, Black Magic 2 remained a solid sequel until the very end, not falling victim to a frenzied ending much like its predecessor. Bringing back a few familiar faces from the first film, the actors are now portraying different characters with a heavier focus on the drinking of breast milk to maintain youth and power (gross) and the telltale sign that you've fallen victim to. I guess I'm getting old, because this time around I found this reasonably paced, not too overbearingly insane Shaw Brother horror tale to be much more satisfying than my previous favorite Boxer's Omen. What this lacks in insane, psychedelic excess it makes up for with a weird Anglo-cool that seems to be freely picking from the colonial pocket, mixing British horror (particularly Quatermass/Hammer and M.R. James style 'rational man refuses to admit supernatural things are happening' plot) and James Bond (of all things!) into the Hong Kong horror melting pot.
Lo Lieh's evil wizard even walks around with a damn cat like some kind of black magic Blofeld, then fights Ti Lung on top of a funicular (that happens in. First Guy: 'I think all of these horrible disfigurements and worms underneath peoples' skin are the result of black magic.' Second Guy: 'I'm sure there's a rational explanation.' First Guy: 'My wife gave birth to a monster baby and she's in a trance all the time; it's definitely black magic.'
Second Guy: 'There must be a scientific reason for this.' First Guy: 'This guy melted in front of us. Someone is actively using black magic to kill people.' Second Guy: 'Alright, tell you what, I'll let my wife be placed under a spell to prove that black magic isn't real.' First Guy: 'I, uh don't think, uh.okay.' This actually got an American release. Hong Kong black magic movies affect me in the same way that Fulci films do - they both find ways to combine the goofy with the gross in a way that's genuinely unnerving.
While a Fulci film will usually feature some assortment of horrific eyeball injuries, razorblade mutilations and faces being torn up by rocks, the thing that's so much more shocking about black magic films is that just about everything that's on screen is inspired by authentic, gross folklore. These films are full of breastmilk, worms, dead cats and zombies - but that's what real, old witchcraft was all about. Black Magic Part II features the same basic framework of the original -.
Some girls take their tops off, jump in the river & begin splashing each other until an alligator attacks. An old dude hums & mumbles with a chicken on the end of a huge hook until the gator returns. Then the old dude walks away.
Meanwhile, Lung Ti, Ni Tien, Lieh Lo & Lily Li return from the first BLACK MAGIC in different roles to horrify & bewitch you. This time around, Lung Ti is a doctor asked to look at what his friend thinks is black magic in the local hospital. Lieh Lo is a wizard who performs spells for people like getting a girl to like them. He pulls a long nail out of a lovely lady’s head & she turns to a.
HoopTober - Episode V: #25 - Countries (5/6) Maybe I've seen too many Shaw Bros. Horrorfilms lately, but this one really underwhelmed me, even though it's said that this is one of the best. I don't know, but the storybeats felt too repetitive and pretty much every decision the characters made was absolutely stupid. All in all it's a fun watch, but it doesn't come close to the batshit crazyness of films like SEEDING OF A GHOST or THE BOXER'S OMEN. Maybe I'd have liked it more if I'd seen it before those two. Black Magic II features Ti Lung and Lo Lieh, major wuxia stars dating back to the late 60s.
Ti plays a doctor who travels to “A Tropical City” (it’s in Thailand, in all these movies the evil comes from Thailand) with his wife to visit and help out a couple of fellow doctors. It seems Lo is an evil wizard with a mansion full of zombies, and his recipe for immortality requires young female victims. The doctors are on the case, evincing an impressive inability to accept the obvious mystical explanations for the phenomena they witness. The plot structure owes more than a little to Dracula, with Lo’s vampiric villain subsisting not on blood, but breast milk. Lo is always a reliable bad guy, and the sequel is better than its predecessor if for no other reason than that it centers him in the story rather than having him be a merely preliminary victim. Erotic, bloody, and crazy! Fun but super cheesy.
Pretty slow, the acting wasn’t very good, the costumes were very 70s (authentic), the concept was ok. Easy to follow simple ‘zombie’ movie with magic components. Highlight was the set design, the zombie makeup, and the setting. Crazy premise of a witch doctor who revives dead women so men fall in love with them. Love Hong Kong films and this one did not disappoint.
Cheesy but so much fun! Best performance: Lo Lieh. He is quickly becoming a cult classic star for me.
